If you read my blog often, you probably know that i am a big fan of Jdownloader and i wrote a blog post about it (27 feb 2009) which is located at here.Jdownloader becomes more and more popular and its development becomes more active. However, I feel that the new GUI of Jdownloader becomes slower and i always want to see the alternatives. So here comes FreeRapid, an alternative to Jdownloader for downloading from multiple file hosting sites. Before the installation progress, it will be better to check the CONS and PROS of the software:PROS :
*Faster (Software, not download speeds)
*Plugins can be auto updated
*I have downloaded around 70 files, i do not see a single problem
CONS :
*Jdownloader has a lot more options and addons
*I don't see any kind of Web Interface
*Can not remember rar/zip passwords*Can not create directories
Installation :
Click here and download 0.82 version of FreeRapid which is released on 15 April 2009.Unzip it anywhere you want (in this example unzipped FreeRapid-0.82 folder is located at /home/USERNAME).
Navigate to the FreeRapid-0.82 folder :
$cd FreeRapid-0.82and run it via :
$java -jar frd.jarPS : You will need Sun's Java to run FreeRapid so be sure you have it before running it.
If everything is ok and you want to keep the software, let's create a shortcut for it :
Open menu editor with alacarte command :
$alacarteClick Internet, then click "New Item" button and fill the spaces :
Name : FreeRapid
Command : Click browse and select frd.jar (Example : /home/XXXX/SVNs/FreeRapid-0.82/frd.jar )
Comment : FreeRapid is a download manager for file hosting sites.
And you can find the icon at FreeRapid-0.82 directory ;)
Click Ok when you are done. Before starting FreeRapid from Applications > Internet > FreeRapid shortcut, we have to give executable permissions to frd.jar.So navigate to FreeRapid-0.82 directory and give the permission :
$cd FreeRapid-0.82$chmod +x frd.jar
